I remember walking to the bus stop at 6am most mornings during my junior & senior year of high school feeling completely numb, miserable, cut off from myself, and sad about the world.
Staring at the sidewalk *deep in thought* one morning, something lit up in me, saying, “it’s ok — this is all just a part of your story.” It was like a future hope put its hand out to nudge me on the back in comfort to keep going.
That same day, while walking home from the bus stop, I passed Juanamaria Park. I noticed a goth girl, much older than me, cussing and yelling at a rose bush. She kicked all the roses off the rose bush in absolute rage.
One of the last rose buds near the top of the bush hung on for dear life, refusing to fall off no matter how hard she kicked it. “I DIDN’T SAY YOU COULD LIVE!” she screamed at it, kicking and whacking at it until all the petals exploded in every direction like confetti.
After she got through a few heavy breaths she noticed me watching. We exchanged a dirty look. She walked away.
The poor topped rose bush looked so pathetic and wounded. I wanted to cry. But not for the rose bush — mainly for the girl. What could be so freaking wrong this girl feels she needs to obliterate some innocent flowers just trying to do their best to be beautiful?
I stood frozen for a moment with all kinds of emotional naïve judgments. “Wow, rude!” I wanted to yell after her (but I was too scared lol). Witnessing such a short violent moment felt mildly traumatizing.
I walked over to all the warped petals on the ground. Awkwardly saying “I’m… sorry” to the pile of petals at my feet was the only thing I could think to do.
One of the petals floated several inches closer to me through the breeze. I watched for a minute then sighed before finally turning around to head home. When I was walking away, the thought from that morning (which I had since forgotten) swept over me again: “This is all just a part of her story.”
